Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krAccording to the Yeojidoseo, an eighteenth-century Joseon gazetteer, the government office of Nampo Eupseong, the town's walled enclosure, once comprised many buildings, including the Gaeksa (guest house), Dongheon (magistrate's administrative hall), Asa (residence hall), Hyangcheong (local gentry hall), Jakcheong (clerks' hall) and Hyeonsa (county records office). Today only the Dongheon, the Naesammun and the government office gate known as Jinseoru survive. The Dongheon, the office of the county magistrate, is a hip-and-gable-roofed building seven bays wide and three bays deep. The government office gate, which served as the main entrance to the Nampo county office, is a two-storey gate-tower building three bays wide and two bays deep, with a passage below and a raised wooden floor (numaru) above, also under a hip-and-gable roof; it faithfully follows the standardised design of government office gates built uniformly throughout the country at the time to symbolise the centralised authority of the Joseon Dynasty, and bears a plaque reading Jinseoru. The Naesammun is seven bays wide and one bay deep; its central bay forms a raised gate section that served as the entrance, and the front of the building bears a plaque reading Oksan Amun.
