Gimje Jeongyo Stele
김제전교비 · 金堤傳敎碑

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Jeongyo Stele was erected to commemorate the king's order exempting local residents from taxes. In the area of Ilbuk-myeon, Haseo-myeon and Chocheo-myeon in the former Geumgu-hyeon, every time it rained, water from the surrounding region would all flow into this area, washing away bridges and causing great hardship. Moreover, abuses by local officials meant that even heavier taxes were being collected, so the king issued a command, and in 1680, the sixteenth year of King Sukjong, a royal edict was handed down exempting the area from taxes. The stele standing beside it is said to have been erected by the residents in gratitude to Magistrate Yi Sun-ik, who drove out the private tax collector responsible and eliminated these abuses. Both steles had been damaged and were buried in the ground by villagers for safekeeping; they were discovered in 1971 and restored to their original form in 1973.
