Wonju Taejangdong King Nyeobongnan Placenta Chamber Stele
원주태장동왕녀복란태실비 · 原州台庄洞王女福蘭胎室碑

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA placenta chamber stele (taesilbi) is erected beside a placenta chamber (taesil) — a stone chamber built to house the placenta of a king or a member of the royal family — and it records the identity of the placenta's owner. This stele belongs to the placenta chamber of Princess Bongnan, who was born in 1486, the seventeenth year of King Seongjong of Joseon. The stele consists of a square base, a body and a capstone carved from a single piece of stone. The capstone is carved to resemble a covering of lotus petals, and its crown bears a carved bead-shaped ornament (bangju), a jewel shaped like a flower bud, as a finial. During an excavation by Hallim University Museum in 1992, a stone box containing the placenta was found separately, 3 metres behind the stele. The village was once called Taejangjeong because a placenta was buried there, and its name was changed to Taejang-dong in 1955.
