These printing blocks are for the Garyejeunghae chobon (draft edition), which the scholar Yi Ui-jo began in 1758, the thirty-fourth year of King Yeongjo, in order to unify family and ceremonial etiquette nationwide: he listed, supplemented and interpreted the various Korean theories on the Family Rites of Zhu Xi (Juja garye), added his own views, and completed the work in 1771, the forty-seventh year of King Yeongjo. These printing blocks were carved from zelkova wood at Jikjisa Temple, beginning in 1792, the sixteenth year of King Jeongjo, by Kim Pung-hae and others, and were completed after three years of work in 1794, the eighteenth year of King Jeongjo. Comprising a total of 475 printing blocks, they display excellent carving craftsmanship and are well preserved, and are regarded as a valuable resource for the study of family rites.
