Seated Stone Buddha in Pyeonggeo-dong, Jinju
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This seated stone Buddha stands on the former site of Sinmansa Temple in Pyeonggeo-dong, Jinju, Gyeongsangnam-do. Apart from the head, which was newly made, the body of the Buddha is relatively well preserved. The broad shoulders, full chest and narrow waist clearly show the characteristics of Unified Silla Buddhist sculpture, and the wide knees give a sense of stability. The robe covers only the left shoulder; the right hand hangs down below the knee while the left hand rests on the chest. The halo, which represents the light radiating from the Buddha's body, is carved with vivid scroll and flame patterns. This is an early Goryeo work that faithfully follows the Unified Silla style of stone Buddha carving.
