Five-story Stone Pagoda of Jangchunsa Temple, Haman
함안 장춘사 오층석탑 · 咸安 長春寺 五層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krStanding in front of Daeungjeon Hall at Jangchunsa Temple, this pagoda originally stood elsewhere and was moved to its present site. It originally comprised a five-storey body set on a two-tiered base, but only the lower four storeys survive today. The body stones of each storey are the pagoda's most notable feature: each is trapezoidal in plan, narrowing toward the top, which is thought to have been designed to give a sense of visual stability as the storeys rise. The roof stones have three-tiered eave supports on the first and second storeys and two-tiered supports from the third storey upward, and their otherwise horizontal eaves curve up slightly at the four corners. Only the square base stone that once supported the finial survives at the top. Overall the pagoda conveys an impression of height and slenderness rather than stability. Judging from the style and technique of its individual parts, it is presumed to have been built in the late Goryeo period.
