Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a Catholic church in Gangwon State. The site was originally a place where Catholic believers gathered and took refuge as persecution of Catholicism intensified during the Byeongin yangyo, the French punitive expedition of 1866, in 1866, the third year of Emperor Gojong of Joseon. In 1890, the twenty-seventh year of Emperor Gojong, the French priest Father Le Merre arrived as the first parish priest and founded a thatched parish building of twenty kan, a traditional unit denoting the number of bays. The second priest, Jeong Gyu-ha (1893-1943), who took up his post in 1896, the thirty-third year of Emperor Gojong, personally designed and built the parish building; in 1907, the first year of the Yunghui era, Chinese craftsmen and all the parishioners took part in the construction, completing the church as it stands today. The architectural style is Gothic: the facade has a projecting bell tower, and the entrance is open in the form of an arch. The roof is laid with thick copper plate, and inside, rows of columns stand in line, with joint lines drawn on them to make them look like brick pillars. Pungsuwon Church is the first Catholic church in Gangwon State built by a Korean priest, and it is a venerable eclectic Gothic building, the fourth to be built in Korea.
