Yesan Sanghang-ri Stone Buddha
예산상항리석불 · 禮山上項里石佛

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krCarved on a flat, oval-shaped stone, this is a Buddha image in a form similar to a rock-carved Buddha (maaebul). The face is round and full, with the eyes and mouth rendered small in thin lines, yet it wears a smile. The body is flat, without any sense of volume, and the shoulders are rounded. The robe, draped over both shoulders, shows crudely carved stepped folds, with a sash knot below the chest and stomach. The figure sits with both feet raised onto the knees, soles turned upward, though the treatment of the right foot is somewhat awkward. The halo, representing the light emanating from the Buddha's body, is rendered in incised lines. Four small Buddha figures are carved on each side of the head halo, and the body halo is decorated with a prominent lotus stem bearing large flowers and leaves. The halo and the Buddha image were carved from a single stone. Flat and rectilinear (square-based) in character, this is a fine example of a localised Buddha image of the Goryeo period.
