Chungsukgong Yi Sang-gil Burial Ground
충숙공 이상길 묘역 · 忠肅公 李尙吉 墓域

A sindobi is a stele recording the lifetime achievements of a king or high official, erected before his tomb; this stele honours the achievements of Yi Sang-gil, a civil official of the mid-Joseon period. Yi Sang-gil passed the civil service examination in 1585, the eighteenth year of King Seonjo, and entered official life. Under King Injo he served as Minister of Works, and when the Manchu invasion broke out in 1636, the fourteenth year of King Injo, he was appointed a reception envoy by royal command and, despite being eighty years old, went to Ganghwado Island. The following year, as Qing forces advanced on Ganghwado Island, he entrusted his affairs to his son and ended his own life. In recognition of his loyalty he was posthumously given the title 'Chungsukgong' (忠肅公) and promoted to Left State Councillor. The stele consists of a stone body set on a square base and topped with a roof stone, and it retains the style of the mid-Joseon period intact. The inscription was composed by Song Si-yeol, who served as rector of Seonggyungwan, and the calligraphy was written by Song Jun-gil.
