A sajeokbi is a stele recording facts or traces related to a particular event; this stele records the founding of Neunggasa Temple. According to its inscription, Neunggasa was founded by the monk Ado in 419, the third year of King Nulji of Silla, when it was originally named Bohyeonsa Temple. After it burned down during the Japanese invasions of Korea (Imjin War), the monk Jeonghyeon rebuilt the temple in 1644, the 22nd year of King Injo, and renamed it Neunggasa. The stele consists of a body erected on a turtle-shaped base stone, topped with a capstone carved with clouds and a dragon. The date of erection recorded on the stele, read as "sungjeong gi-won hu jae gyeongo" (崇禎紀元后再庚午), has been understood as 1690. However, this should be read as the second gyeongo year following the start of the Chongzhen reign period, not counting the gyeongo year (1630) that fell within the reign itself; and when compared with the active periods of the inscription's author, calligrapher, and other related figures, the actual date of erection is 1750.
