A budo, or stupa, symbolises a monk's grave, a place enshrining the remains or sari, relics of the deceased. Within the grounds of Daewonsa Temple there are ten stupas in total — four to the northeast and six in the valley — and this Yonggak stupa is the third of the four standing to the northeast. It takes the form of a bulging, cylindrical stupa body set on a base stone carved with lotus flowers. The body is decorated with clouds carved at the very top, two large dragons coiling around each other as if to seize a wish-fulfilling jewel in the middle, and lotus flowers at the bottom. A finial sits at the top, but it is not the original piece. Judging from the lively carving technique filling the entire body of the stupa, the work is presumed to date from the Goryeo period.
