This is a portrait of Yi Je-hyeon (pen name Ikjae, 1287-1367), a civil official of the late Goryeo period. It follows the same format as his portrait held at the National Museum of Korea (National Treasure No. 110), and is thought to have been copied out during the Joseon dynasty. It is a full-length seated portrait, showing the subject seated turned slightly to the right with both hands clasped in front, and measures 96 cm wide and 165 cm high. Above the figure an inscription records the circumstances of the painting's production together with an encomium, and to the right a desk bearing several books is arranged, making for an engaging compositional layout. The armrests of the chair are set to the front while the desk with the books sits naturally behind the figure, giving the pose a sense of stability. The lines used for the face vary subtly in character and are handled softly. Although it is a faithful copy (imobon), made by tracing an existing portrait rather than painted from life, it shows one aspect of Goryeo-period portraiture, and its overall style of expression closely follows the original.
