Hoesa-dong Stone Pagoda
회사동석탑 · 檜寺洞石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis pagoda stands in the middle of a field believed to be the site of a former temple. It consists of a three-storey body set on a two-tier foundation. Where the foundation supports the first-storey body stone, two thick tiers of blocking stones bear the weight of the stone above. On the corners of the first-storey body stone, faint pillar-shaped carvings can be seen. Each roof stone has three tiers of supports on its underside; although the first-storey roof stone is somewhat damaged, the pagoda gives an impression of solidity and elegance. At the top, a bokbal (an overturned bowl-shaped ornament) remains as part of the finial, though this too appears to be a later addition. The foundation is small and simplified, so that the pagoda lacks a sense of stability, yet despite its modest height of 140 cm the body of the pagoda is even and solidly built. It follows the stone pagoda style of Unified Silla, but the thick blocking stones set above the foundation to support the body, and the reduction of the roof-stone underside supports to three tiers, suggest that it is in fact a work of the Goryeo period.
