This is where Yi Chung-beom (1520–1598), a mid-Joseon scholar known by his pen name Dongcheon, trained his students. It is said to have first been built on the bank of the Yanggang River in the early Joseon period, and it underwent several rounds of repair from the fourth year of King Injo (1626) up to the forty-sixth year of King Sukjong (1720), surviving to the present day. It was originally called Punggokdang, but in 1614, the sixth year of King Gwanghaegun, when the scholar Jeong Gu, known by his pen name Hangang, stayed here and encouraged learning under the idea of drawing on proper models to rectify scholarship, its name was changed to Japungdang. The building measures five bays across the front and two bays deep, with a gable roof whose sides form the shape of the character 人 (person), and it retains well the architectural style of around the eighteenth century. A memorial rite is still held here every year on 19 October, and the sound of reading here is counted as one of the Eight Scenic Views of Yangsan.
