Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis monument was erected to commemorate the achievements of General Gwon Yul (1537-1599), who repelled Japanese forces at Haengjusanseong Fortress during the Japanese invasions of Korea (the Imjin War). After the war ended, officers and soldiers who had served under General Gwon Yul erected it at the summit of Haengjusanseong Fortress in 1602, the thirty-fifth year of King Seonjo, to honour his achievements. The inscription was composed by Choe Rip and written by Han Ho, while the jeonaek (the seal-script heading giving the stele's title) was written by Kim Sang-yong. The inscription on the back was composed by Gwon Yul's son-in-law Yi Hang-bok and written by Kim Hyeon-seong. A marble stele body with a rounded top, bearing the inscription, was set on a rectangular base stone; but as the surface became badly worn, the original text was copied and re-erected as a reconstruction stele in 1845, the eleventh year of King Heonjong. The reconstruction stele takes the form of a stele body set on a rectangular base and capped with a roof stone. In addition to the original text, it also bears an inscription titled "Haengju gigongsa jungchanggi" (Record of the Reconstruction of the Shrine Commemorating Merit at Haengju), composed by Jo In-yeong and written by Yi Yu-won.
