Seated Rock-carved Buddha in Mureung-ri, Yeongwol
영월 무릉리 마애여래좌상 · 寧越 武陵里 磨崖如來坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krIn Suju-myeon, Yeongwol County, Gangwon State, where the Jucheon River flows, stands a pavilion called Yoseonjeong. This Buddha is a rock-carved image 3.5 m high, carved into a large rock to the east of the pavilion. The oval face is full and rounded, giving it a vivid, lifelike quality, and the heavy robe is draped over both shoulders, its simplified folds incised in shallow lines. The two hands are realistically rendered: the right hand is naturally open with the back of the hand showing, while the left hand is raised parallel to the right. The mandorla, which represents the light radiating from the Buddha's body, consists of a head halo carved in relief with a lotus design and a body halo indicated by two incised lines. The lower body is rendered disproportionately large, unbalancing the overall composition, and the pedestal on which the Buddha sits bears a lotus design in relief. Although the upper body is realistically and vividly rendered, the excessively enlarged knees give the figure an unbalanced appearance. This Buddha is considered a representative rock-carved image of the Yeongwol region from the Goryeo period.
