Three-story Stone Pagoda of Boriam Hermitage, Namhae
남해 보리암 삼층석탑 · 南海菩提庵三層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krStanding atop Geumsan Mountain, Namhae, close to Boriam Hermitage, this three-storey stone pagoda is known as the pagoda in front of Boriam Hermitage, and has become all the more celebrated for the outstanding scenery around it. It follows the typical form, with a three-storey pagoda body set on a two-tier base and topped with a finial. On each face of the lower base, two shallow blank niches are carved, and the upper base is markedly narrower than the lower one. On each face of the body stones, pillars are neatly carved at the corners. The roof stones have three-tiered supports on their undersides, and the eaves stay straight before thickening and curving upward at the four corners. Only a jewel-shaped ornament survives at the top as the finial. It is said that Empress Heo, consort of King Suro, brought a Buddhist relic from India and that the Venerable Wonhyo enshrined it here, but judging from the thick roof stones and the three-tiered roof-stone supports, the pagoda is presumed to date from the Goryeo period.
