This is an iron statue of the Medicine Buddha enshrined at Jijangsa Temple in Sadang-dong, Dongjak-gu, Seoul, standing 98 cm high and 70 cm wide. The face is round yet gaunt, and while the upper body appears fairly imposing, the emphasis on both shoulders gives it a slightly hunched posture. The robe, which covers only the left shoulder, is carved with clearly defined folds, and the left hand is shown holding what appears to be a medicine bowl, the characteristic gesture of the Medicine Buddha. This seated iron Buddha displays the characteristics of the early Goryeo period well, and as a rare example of a Medicine Buddha from that time, it is important material for the study of the history of Buddhist faith.
