Namjigiro Assembly Painting
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This painting depicts a private gathering of a society (gye) of elderly officials aged around seventy or older, held during the reign of King Injo of Joseon. The title is written in a pictorial seal-script style at the top; below the painting is a commemorative essay (gimun) by Jang Yu; on either side, mounted on additional silk, is a preface (seomun) by Yi Gyeong-jik; and beneath the preface and essay is a roster (jwamok), recorded by Yi Gyeong-seok, listing the official posts, names, courtesy names (ja), pen names (ho), dates of birth and clan seats of the society's members, together with the official posts and names of the sons who attended. Compared with the Namjigiro Assembly Painting by Yi Gi-ryong held at Seoul National University Museum (Treasure No. 866), it is judged that only the painter differs - another painter of the Bureau of Painting (Dohwaseo) - since the calligraphy of the essay, preface and roster appears identical; in style of painting, too, it is comparable to Yi Gi-ryong's work, while also having value as a work of the same period in its own right. It further reflects several formal features of both the mid-Joseon Jeolpa painting style and general gyehoedo (society-gathering paintings) of the late sixth century. Whereas the version held at Seoul National University Museum has become somewhat formulaic and pattern-like, the Namjigiro Assembly Painting held at Dong-A University Museum is a work of outstanding style, showing individualised, detailed depiction of the figures and naturalistic rendering of the surrounding scenery.
