Gongju Local Confucian School
공주향교 · 公州鄕校

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is an educational institution built by the state in the early Joseon period to enshrine and hold memorial rites for Confucian scholars, and to educate and morally instruct the local people. The exact date of its first construction is unknown, but it is said that the school, originally located at the foot of Songsan Hill in Ungjin-dong, was moved to its present site in 1623, the first year of King Injo. It has since been repaired on several occasions, and in 1954 the Munmyo shrine complex, the Myeongnyundang lecture hall, the Dongjae dormitory and the Jongyeonggak library were repaired, bringing the school to its present form. Passing through the outer three-gate, one finds Myeongnyundang, the lecture hall, with Dongjae and Jongyeonggak on either side. Passing through the inner three-gate, on ground slightly higher to the rear, Daeseongjeon, the shrine hall, stands directly ahead, flanked by Dongmu and Seomu. In other words, the educational space is arranged at the front and the ritual space at the rear. During the Joseon period the school was granted land, servants and books by the state to teach its students, but after the Gabo Reform of 1894 its educational function ceased, leaving only its function as a place of memorial rites.
