Taein Government Office

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a government office building that stood in Taein County during the Joseon period. A dongheon (local government office) was divided into the naedongheon, the magistrate's private residence, and the oedongheon, where official business was conducted; the term dongheon usually refers to the oedongheon. The present Taein Government Office is thought to have been built during the reign of King Jungjong (r. 1506-1544) and repaired in 1816, the sixteenth year of King Sunjo. It measures six kan across the front and four kan along the side, and has a hipped-and-gabled (paljak) roof, whose gable end forms the shape of the character 八 (eight). The interior is arranged with considerable variety: the right side is a daecheong (open wooden-floored hall) and the left side an ondol (heated) room, with toekan (narrow eaves-bays) at both front and back. In the rear toekan, the right-hand two bays were finished as flooring raised higher than the daecheong, while the rest was left as an earthen floor. This brings together the various functions of a dongheon within a single building, and the spatial arrangement is particularly notable. It is said that the builder persuaded the magistrate, who had wanted to build the office for only 1,000 nyang, to spend 3,000 nyang instead, allowing him to give full rein to his skill. Although the Taein Government Office is not among the largest dongheon buildings surviving in Korea, it is the one whose original form has been best preserved.
