Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Bulseoljangsumyeoljoehojedongjadaranigyeong Sutra was translated in 676 by the Indian monk Buddhapari (佛陀波利). It is a sutra of the Esoteric Buddhist tradition expounding the method of eliminating sin and gaining long life, and in the Goryeo period it was also used as a basic text for rites performed under the Dongjagyeongbeop (童子經法, Rite of the Child Sutra). This sutra records the teaching that Sakyamuni Buddha (釋迦世尊) gave to the Bodhisattva Manjusri (文殊師利菩薩) on the method by which all sentient beings may eliminate sin and gain long life (滅罪長壽). It states that if a disciple who follows the Buddha copies out and recites this sutra, a sick child will also recover from illness, and that if, within forty-nine days of a person's death, this sutra is burned as incense and offered up on their behalf, the deceased will gain long life in this world and escape the suffering of the evil realms. That is, through the Hojedongjadaranigyeong (護諸童子陀羅尼經), this sutra teaches that it can cure children's illnesses and help pregnant women deliver safely, warns against the sin of abortion, and states that keeping this sutra and constantly reading it brings long life, delivers the dead to salvation, and frees one from every evil realm. From the Goryeo period to modern times, numerous printed editions and hand-copied versions of this sutra have been produced. The copy held by Geumjeong Middle School is a later printing made not long after the original 1562 edition, produced before the Japanese invasions of Korea (1592-1598), and is well preserved, making it a valuable heritage material.
