Rock-carved Buddha Statue in Changdong-ri, Chungju
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

Located in Gageum-myeon, Chungju, Chungcheongbuk-do, this is a Buddha image carved in shallow relief on a natural rock face, standing on a pedestal decorated with a lotus design. The long, sharply upturned corners of the eyes and the large nose and ears give the face a stern, dignified expression. The robe draped over both shoulders is rendered with folds carved partly in three straight lines and partly in an unusual wavy pattern. With its rustic atmosphere, unrefined detailing, the omission of carving on the lower body, and its wavy line patterns, the work is characteristic of the distinctive local style often seen in this region.
