Three-story Stone Pagoda in Galgye-ri, Geochang
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This stone pagoda stands at an old temple site about 200 m from a village known as Tapbul. The site has now largely become farmland, making it hard to gauge the temple's original scale, and no records survive of its history, so it is not known which temple the pagoda once belonged to. The pagoda has a square, double-tiered pedestal, following the general style of Unified Silla-period stone pagodas. However, its overall simplified construction technique clearly reflects changes that emerged after the Goryeo period. On both the upper and lower tiers of the pedestal, a central pillar was carved alongside the corner pillars. The single, gently sloping capstone linking the body to the pedestal was made from one piece of stone. Each body stone is carved only with corner pillars, with no other decoration. Each roof stone has four-tiered eaves-supports, and the drip-edge of the eaves is set low, giving only a gentle slope, though the corners curve upward excessively, an exaggerated feature. The top of the pagoda is missing, so its original form cannot be known. Compared with the large pedestal, the body and roof appear small, so the whole lacks overall aesthetic balance, and the roof stones are also too thick, giving the pagoda a crude appearance. Judging from its overall style, the pagoda is presumed to have been made during the Goryeo period.
