Jaegung-ri Stone Lantern
재궁리석등 · 齋宮里石燈

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA jangmyeongdeung is a stone lantern placed before a tomb; this lantern stands in front of the tomb of Yi Gye-maeng (1458–1523). Yi Gye-maeng passed the civil service examination in 1489, the twentieth year of King Seongjong's reign, and rose through the posts of Minister of Rites, Minister of Taxation and Minister of Justice to become Jwachanseong, a senior post in the State Council. The lantern consists of a pedestal made from a single stone, topped with a fire-chamber stone where the lamp was lit, a roof stone, and a finial at the very top. The pedestal's shaft is pinched in at the middle so that it appears divided into three sections: the lower part has a lotus pattern carved at each corner, the thick square middle section is left plain, and the upper part is decorated with lotus and cloud patterns at the corners and on each face. The fire-chamber stone has four windows cut into it. The roof stone's corners curve up sharply, and the top is finished with a bou, a small ball-shaped ornament, carved as a finial. Judging from the square form of each part and the short, thick central shaft of the pedestal, the lantern is thought to date from the Joseon period.
