Jayang Village School
자양서당 · 紫陽書堂

This village school (seodang) was built in 1546, the first year of King Myeongjong of Joseon, by Kim Eung-saeng to educate the younger generation of his hometown, in Nohang-dong, Jayang-myeon. The present building appears to have been rebuilt at a later date. In 1976 it was relocated to its present site owing to the construction of Yeongcheon Dam, at which time a wall and gate were built around the building. It is plainly and simply arranged, consisting only of a wooden-floored hall where students gathered to read and a room for daily living. Ordinary seodang buildings have a toetgan, a narrow bay projecting at the front under the eaves, but Jayang Village School has none. Inside the school hangs a name plaque written in the hand of Yi Hwang (pen name Toegye). General Kim Wan, who is enshrined together with Yi Sun-sin (posthumous title Chungmugong) at Dongnin-gak, was the third son of Kim Eung-saeng.
