This is a rock-carved Buddha on the rock face of Choseondae in Gimhae, Gyeongsangnam-do. Choseondae is the site of a legend that King Geodeung of Garak invited immortals from Chiljeomsan Mountain to enjoy geomungo music and baduk (the board game Go) with him. Because of this legend, the rock-carved Buddha is also said to be a portrait of King Geodeung. The bald head, narrow long eyes, broad nose and thick, wide lips show the local style of rock-carved Buddhas of the Goryeo period. The body is rendered in simple lines, without volume, and appears flat, and the halo is likewise marked off only by lines, plain and without any pattern. The overall impression is representative of the large, monumental rock-carved Buddha style widely produced during the Goryeo period.
