Munyang Group Ryu Hui-rim Burial Ground
문양군 류희림 묘역 · 文陽君 柳希霖 墓域

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the burial ground of Ryu Hui-rim (柳希霖), posthumously honoured as Duke Munyang, and his father Ryu Bok-ryong, Lord Munwon, who served King Seonjo as a meritorious subject of the third class alongside Yi Hang-bok during the Japanese invasions of 1592–98 (the Imjin War). Ryu Hui-rim, the son of Bok-ryong, was a civil official of the mid-Joseon period. In 1560, the fifteenth year of King Myeongjong, he represented some 1,000 students of Sungkyunkwan, the state Confucian academy, in submitting a memorial criticising the resurgence of Buddhism and calling for the abolition of both the Seon and the Doctrinal schools. In 1561, the sixteenth year of King Myeongjong, he passed the regular civil service examination in the third class and went on to hold a succession of official posts. In 1581, the fourteenth year of King Seonjo, he travelled to Ming China as a winter solstice envoy while serving as Vice Minister of Justice, but was demoted to a lesser post after the local produce he had brought as tribute proved insufficient. When the Imjin War broke out in 1592, the twenty-fifth year of King Seonjo, he accompanied the king in flight as a senior official of the Office of Ministers-without-Portfolio and was promoted to Left Royal Secretary. He subsequently held posts including Deputy of the Office of Ministers-without-Portfolio and Vice Minister of Rites, becoming Deputy of the Office of Royal Relations in 1597. After his death, in 1604, the thirty-seventh year of King Seonjo, he was posthumously honoured as a meritorious subject of the third class for having escorted the king to safety, and was granted the title Duke Munyang. The tomb lies within Ogeum Park in Songpa-gu, Seoul, and the burial ground contains a stone offering table, a spirit post (a stone pillar marking a grave from a distance), stone civil officials, and a spirit path stele (a monument recording the lifetime achievements of a king or high official, erected near the tomb).
