Surigol Historic House, Gangneung
강릉 수리골 고택 · 江陵 수리골 古宅

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis house stands close to Lake Gyeongpoho, separated only by a single wall from Haeunjeong Pavilion. Its exact date of construction is unknown, but the main house appears to be some 350 to 360 years old, and the detached men's quarters some 250 to 260 years old. The house is laid out in a square, ㅁ-shaped plan: to the right of the main gate stands the L-shaped sarangchae, the men's quarters, and to the left, a cattle shed. The main house stands across the courtyard, with one bay linking it to the sarangchae left open to serve as a passage. The main house is a double-row house of four bays across the front and two bays deep, divided into four rooms, with a narrow wooden veranda set facing the inner courtyard. To the left there was originally a kitchen and a storeroom, giving an L-shape, but the section adjoining the kitchen has since been converted into a room, so its original form can no longer be seen. The sarangchae comprises five bays, and both the main house and the sarangchae have an ornate hipped-and-gabled roof shaped like the character 八. The house overall has a refined, dignified air; low hills stand behind it, but the surroundings have changed considerably, and much of its former charm has been lost.
