Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the stele of State Preceptor Jajeong, a title (gukjon) bestowed on the highest-ranking monks, located within Beopjusa Temple on Songnisan Mountain. State Preceptor Jajeong (1240–1327) served as abbot of several temples, including Gungnyeongsa, Jangeuisa and Beopjusa, and rose to the rank of doseungtong, head of the Buddhist clergy; his pen name was Bomyeong. The stele has an unusual form: rather than being built as a freestanding rectangular monument, its body was carved directly out of the natural bedrock into an elongated rectangular shape. The front bears an inscription concerning State Preceptor Jajeong, though the lower portion is partly damaged. It was erected in 1342, the third year of the restored reign of Goryeo's King Chunghye; the inscription was composed by Yi Suk-gi at the king's command, and the calligraphy was written by Jeon Won-bal.
