Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krSeonamseowon is a Confucian academy (seowon) dedicated to Kim Dae-yu, pen name Samjokdang, and Bak Ha-dam, pen name Soyodang. In 1567, the first year of King Seonjo, spirit tablets for the two men were enshrined at Unsujeong in Dongsan-dong, Maejeon-myeon, under the name Hyanghyeonsa; in 1577, the tenth year of King Seonjo, it was moved to its present site and renamed Seonamseowon. It was rebuilt in 1676, the second year of King Sukjong, but was demolished in 1868, the fifth year of Emperor Gojong, under Heungseon Daewongun's order abolishing seowon academies. The present buildings were rebuilt in 1878, the fifteenth year of Emperor Gojong's reign, by descendants of Bak Ha-dam. Passing through the main gate, the inner quarters, Deukwoljeong Pavilion and the servants' quarters form a U-shaped layout, behind which stands Seonam Lecture Hall. The hall measures five bays across the front and two bays deep; the central three bays form a wooden-floored hall (daecheong), flanked by rooms on either side. In the southern bay of the gate quarters are kept the woodblocks for the literary collections of fourteen scholars, including Songeun, Udang, Soyodang and Jeu-dang.
