Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the burial ground of the Hamyang Yeo clan, located in Gochcheok 2-dong, Guro-gu, Seoul. The founding ancestor of the Hamyang Yeo clan was Yeo Eo-mae, a native of Naeju in China, and the clan's seat is Hamyang, Gyeongsangnam-do. Yeo Eo-mae was originally a man of Tang China who had served as a Hallim hakksa, an academician of the Hallim Academy, but fled the Huang Chao Rebellion and became a naturalised subject of Silla in the third year of King Heongang of Unified Silla (877). He settled in Byeokjin-myeon, Seongju-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do, and during the Goryeo period the clan produced a Gongjo jeonseo, head of the Ministry of Public Works. Within the burial ground, the tomb of Lord Sungeuirang, an ancestor of the Hamyang Yeo clan (Sungeuirang being an honorary court title), lies on the upper ground, with the tomb of his wife below it. Lord Sungeuirang was a figure of the early Joseon period who served as Jwarang and later Champan (Vice Minister) of the Ministry of Taxation under King Taejong. He died in the third year of King Sejong (1421), and his tomb was prepared here in the tenth year of King Sejong (1428). His wife was of the Cheongsong Sim clan, granddaughter of Sim Baek-deok, who had served as a State Council minister, and daughter of Sim Ui-gu, who had served as a magistrate. The burial ground covers a total area of 1,025 square metres and contains two burial mounds, one gravestone, two offering tables, and two stone statues of civil and military officials. As a form of tomb that reveals early Joseon burial customs, it is valuable not only for its memorial and foundation stones but also for the study of the style of the gravestone and the civil and military official statues.
