This is a thatched-roof house at the centre of Gangneung, built in the late Joseon period. It measures three bays across the front and two bays deep, with two rooms on the left and a kitchen on the right. It is built in the gyeopjip style, a double-row house plan, with the main room and a small side room arranged at the rear and a toenmaru, a narrow wooden-floored veranda, at the front. The corner posts were set to lean slightly inward, and the frame was joined without nails, using mortise-and-tenon joints and straw rope instead. The thatched roof over the kitchen in particular comes down almost to the ground. The walls are of earth, and the timber is rather roughly finished. A wall of earth and stone surrounds the house. The floor plan is close to the shape of the Chinese character 田 (field), but the house has an unusual, semi-subterranean feel reminiscent of a prehistoric pit dwelling, and it shows a typical form of traditional Korean architecture.
