신원사대웅전 · 新元寺大雄殿

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krSinwonsa Temple stands at the foot of Gyeryongsan Mountain and is said to have been first built by the monk Bodeok in the eleventh year of King Uija of Baekje (651). It was rebuilt several times through the Goryeo and Joseon periods, and the present Daeungjeon Hall is said to have been built by the monk Boyeon in the thirteenth year of Emperor Gojong of Joseon (1876). It measures three bays across the front and three bays to the side, and is a splendid building with a hip-and-gable roof whose sides form the shape of the character 八 (eight). The ends of the eaves are turned slightly upward to give an elegant effect. It is built in the dapo style, in which decorative bracket sets supporting the roof are placed both above the columns and between them; the brackets are carved with lotus flowers, in a very simplified style. Inside, Amitabha Buddha is enshrined as the principal image, flanked by the bodhisattvas Avalokiteshvara and Mahasthamaprapta, and a canopy (datjip) is set above the statues to lend solemnity.
