Sim Ui-gwan Historic House, Donghae
동해 심의관 고택 · 東海 沈議官 古宅

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krSet against a low, wooded hill behind it, this house is thought to have been built about 250 years ago. The main house (anchae), the men's quarters (sarangchae) and the storehouse are arranged in a square (mija) layout enclosing an inner courtyard. The main house measures three bays across the front and two bays in depth, and takes the form of a straight-fronted gyeopjip, a house with two parallel rows of rooms under a single roof. It has a kitchen on the right and four rooms, with a narrow wooden veranda (toenmaru) running along the front of two rooms facing the courtyard, used as a connecting passage. Its roof, whose gable end takes the shape of the character 八 (meaning "eight"), is an ornate hipped-and-gabled (paljak) roof. The storehouse and stable attached to the kitchen also connect through to the men's quarters, with the main gate set between them. The men's quarters form an L-shaped block of five bays, with a gate bay and a servants' room set between it and the main house on the left. The main house was built on higher ground than the men's quarters and outbuildings, which were kept lower, so as not to obstruct ventilation and light. A shrine stands about 15m to the right of the main building, surrounded by a bamboo grove. The house preserves folk household implements used during the Joseon period, such as palanquins, folding screens and wooden trays, along with books.
