Bokdobyeoreop Amgakja, Danyang

This is a natural rock face carved with the characters for 'Bokdobyeoreop', said to be in the hand of Toegye Yi Hwang, who served as magistrate of Danyang during the reign of King Myeongjong of Joseon. The nearby Bokdoso is a reservoir that Yi Hwang built while magistrate of Danyang to irrigate the surrounding paddies and fields. The water was so clear and the setting so fine — bathing there was said to purify body and mind alike — that Yi Hwang made this his byeoreop, a private retreat away from public life.
