This is a late-life work of Chusa Kim Jeong-hui (1786–1856), a scholar-official, scholar and calligrapher-painter of late Joseon, inscribed with the phrase 'Written at seventy-one, while ill.' Kim Jeong-hui was a disciple of Bak Je-ga, the foremost figure of the Bukhak (Northern Learning) school. Influenced by the evidential scholarship of Qing China, he studied epigraphy, and as an outstanding artist he created the distinctive Chusa style of calligraphy and was a master of literati painting. Kim Jeong-hui passed the saengwon examination (a licentiate degree) in 1809, the ninth year of King Sunjo, and the munkwa civil service examination in 1819, and introduced evidential scholarship to Korea. It is said that he died three days after writing the phrase 'Written at seventy-one, while ill', though there are several accounts of the actual year of his death.
