This is an old house in Dohwa-ri. The present main house is U-shaped in plan, but traces of a building at the front suggest that there was originally an outer house as well, giving the whole a fully enclosed, quadrangular layout. Centred on the daecheong (open wooden-floored hall), it has the anbang (main room) and geonneonbang (room across the hall) on either side, with a kitchen and sangbang (front room) added in front of the geonneonbang. Normally the anbang and its adjoining upper room are fitted with sliding paper doors that can be opened up into a single space, but here the space between them is closed off with a wall, a feature found only in old houses. The daecheong and kitchen are comparatively spacious for the size of the house, and a toenmaru (narrow open veranda) was placed in front of the sangbang and used as a space for receiving guests. The round log chimney and the kokul beside the kitchen window — a device for burning resin-rich pinewood to give light in the dark — are also features characteristic of mountain dwellings throughout the Taebaeksan range.
