Yi Gwang-im Historic House
이광임선생고택 · 李廣任先生故宅

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis wood-framed tiled house was built by Yi Gwang-im (1784–1857) in 1820, the 20th year of King Sunjo of Joseon. The L-shaped main hall (anchae), the straight-line men's quarters (sarangchae), and the servants' quarters (haengnangchae) together form a square layout around the central courtyard. Built on sloping ground levelled into several tiers, the building shows a marked difference in height between its foundations and the courtyard, creating a dynamic exterior space. The sarangchae measures seven bays across the front and three bays deep, arranged from left to right as a room, a wooden-floored hall (daecheong), a room, a room, and a kitchen. The daecheong occupies two bays, and the two rooms to its right can be combined into a single space as needed; the kitchen is set at the rear, while an attic loft (nudarak) is placed at the front. This arrangement reflects features characteristic of the region. A plaque commemorating the filial conduct of Yi Gwang-im's son, Yi Seung-yu, hangs in the house, attesting to a long history bound up with filial piety and family harmony. Yi Gwang-im's historic house was built to make the fullest use of its natural setting, and offers valuable evidence of the lifestyle and architectural style of a middle-ranking yangban household of the period.
