Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krJagyeseowon is a private Confucian academy built in the thirteenth year of King Jungjong (1518) to honour the scholarship and virtuous conduct of Kim Il-son, a civil official and scholar of the early Joseon period. It was rebuilt in the eleventh year of King Seonjo (1578), and after it burned down during the Japanese invasions of Korea it was rebuilt again in the seventh year of King Gwanghaegun (1615), when Kim Geuk-il and Kim Dae-yu were also enshrined there. In the second year of King Hyeonjong (1661) it received the royal name plaque 'Jagye', granting it official recognition and financial support from the state. It was abolished in the eighth year of Emperor Gojong (1871) under the decree of Heungseon Daewongun ordering the closure of seowon nationwide, and was restored in 1924. The name 'Jagye' (Purple Stream) derives from the stream flowing in front of the academy, which is said to have turned red for three days when Kim Il-son suffered persecution in the Muo sahwa, a literati purge, in the fourth year of King Yeonsangun (1498); the academy itself came to be called Jagyeseowon after this stream. The buildings that survive today include Jondeoksa, the shrine hall; Jeonsacheong, where ritual preparations were made; Boindang, the lecture hall; the triple gate; Yeonggwiru pavilion; and the dongjae and seojae, the east and west study halls. Of these, Yeonggwiru and the dongjae and seojae are designated as Provincial Tangible Cultural Heritage of Gyeongsangbuk-do. Yeonggwiru was the venue for the academy's various events, where students would gather to compose poetry and enjoy refined pursuits. The dongjae and seojae were living quarters where students studied, ate and slept. Beside Yeonggwiru stands a ginkgo tree said to have been planted by Kim Il-son, and a wonjeongbi and a sindobi, memorial steles, stand within a stele pavilion. The academy no longer functions as a school, and today only memorial rites are held there, in February and August each year.
