The Yi Deok-seong family maintained a political allegiance to the Soron faction and an academic commitment to Yangming Learning, and in the late Joseon period it formed the Ganghwa School; from the middle to the late Joseon period the family exerted great political and scholarly influence on Joseon society, producing what was known as the 'yukjin palgwang', a byword for the family's most outstanding members. The family also produced many noted calligraphers over the generations; the calligraphy style of Yi Gwang-sa, known as the 'Wongyo style' after his pen name, rivalled that of Chusa Kim Jeong-hui. These old documents all date from the 17th and 18th centuries, after the Japanese invasions of Korea. Although the documents span only some 300 to 400 years, their connection to 'Portrait of Yi Deok-seong and Related Materials', designated Treasure No. 1501, further enhances their value. Among the old books, the works of this distinguished family include examples of the handwriting of noted calligraphers and the autographs of famous figures, and since most are unique manuscript copies, they can serve as valuable material for research into Korean bibliography, Korean literature and the history of Korean art. The official documents, too, can serve as important material not only for research into the state examination system and personnel administration of the period but also into the history of Korean clans and prominent families; in particular, the fact that all 56 sheets of the gyocheop and gyoji, certificates of appointment, of Seogan-gong Yi Jin-su appear to have survived intact without a single loss should be of great help in accurately understanding the circumstances of the time.
