This stele records the history of Daerosa, a shrine built in 1785 (the ninth year of King Jeongjo) on the riverbank at Yeoju, Gyeonggi Province, to hold memorial rites for the great scholar-statesman of King Sukjong's reign, Song Si-yeol (pen name Uam, 1607-1689). "Daero" (Great Elder) was an honorific title that King Jeongjo bestowed on Song Si-yeol. To honour him in 1787, the third gapja (sixtieth-anniversary) year after his birth, the king erected this monumental stele, standing about 390cm in total height. On the centre of the front of the stele body (the section bearing the inscription) the title "Daerosabi" (Stele of Daerosa) is carved in large seal script (jeonseo), while the inscription proper is written in standard script (haeseo) on the left side, back, and right side of the stele body. In the upper right of the front, a small seal-script inscription reads "eoje-eopil" (royally composed, royally written), showing that King Jeongjo himself wrote both the text and the calligraphy. The seal script is stately and the standard script flowing and elegant, making this the finest monumental work among the steles written in the king's own hand. Traces of red lacquer still remain in the grooves of the carved characters. The stele has a bangbugaeseok form, with the stele body set upright on a square base stone and topped with a roof stone.
