환성사심검당 · 環城寺尋劍堂

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krHwanseongsa Temple, at the foot of Palgongsan Mountain, was built in 835, the tenth year of King Heungdeok of Silla, by Royal Preceptor Simji. Simgeomdang Hall is a lecture hall standing beside Daeungjeon Hall; the date of its original construction is uncertain, but it is thought to have been built in the early Joseon period. The present building was dismantled and repaired in 1976. It measures three bays across the front and three bays deep, with a simple gabled roof shaped like the character 人 (person). The front has double eaves while the rear has single eaves, a structural style common in the early and mid-Joseon periods. The bracket sets (gongpo) that support the roof eaves while also serving a decorative function are placed only above the columns, in the simple jusimpo style. A plaque inscribed in 1824, the 24th year of King Sunjo, hangs in the hall.
