Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe seated Shakyamuni Triad in the centre and the Sixteen Arhats on either side, enshrined in Eungjinjeon Hall of Jangansa Temple, are well preserved with no damaged or missing parts. The entire surface of the figures is coated with hobun, a white pigment made from powdered oyster shell, and the robes of the Sixteen Arhats and their attendant figures are painted in various colours. A record said to have been found inside the statues reveals that the Shakyamuni Triad and the Sixteen Arhats of Eungjinjeon Hall were made at Jangansa Temple in 1684 by nine craftsmen, including the master artisans Seungho, Huiyeon, Cheonhwi, Cheondam, Beopja, Beopjong, Sujong, Heoye and Dosin. The 23 carved figures of Eungjinjeon Hall appear to have been made from a softer stone than the Buddha statue in Jangansa Temple's Daeungjeon Hall, and were made 25 years after it. The various statues of Eungjinjeon Hall were made at the same time as the stone Ksitigarbha and Ten Kings of the Underworld statues in the Myeongbujeon Hall, and share the same carving technique and style of expression, confirming that, as recorded in the document, they were produced with the participation of many donors during a major Buddhist ceremony held at Jangansa Temple at the time. The Shakyamuni Triad, the Sixteen Arhats and their attendant figures in Eungjinjeon Hall of Jangansa Temple are an important work of seventeenth-century Buddhist sculpture, with a clear record of the date and place of enshrinement and the identities of the makers and donors. As the list of master artisans named as makers has not yet been linked to any other known work, it is also expected to contribute to research on Buddhist sculptor-monks of the Busan and Gyeongnam region.
