Sokcho Kim Jong-u House
속초김종우가옥 · 束草金宗友家屋

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis house is said to have been built in the mid-eighteenth century, and the present owner's family has lived here since the owner's father's time. It consists of a main house (anchae), a servants' quarters (haengnangchae) and an attached storehouse. The main house is a gyeopjip, a double-row house centred on ondol-heated rooms with a wooden floor added, arranged in an L shape. It has a paljak roof, a hip-and-gable roof, built on a five-purlin frame. In the floor plan the kitchen is on the right; the front row holds two bays of wooden floor and a sarangbang, a men's reception room, while the rear row holds the master bedroom, a back room and a rear sarang room. The cattle shed adjoining the kitchen projects out by one bay at the same height as the roof of the main house, its upper level used for storage. The foundation built of natural stones and the roughly finished timber give the house a distinctive charm. Its double-row layout and the structure in which the stable projects from the main house are typical of the traditional houses found in this region.
