Old House in Jungjeon-ri, Jecheon
제천 중전리 고가 · 堤川 中田里 古家

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is an old house of a wealthy farming family, thought to have been built in the mid-nineteenth century. It has an open square layout formed by an L-shaped main house (anchae) and an L-shaped men's quarters (sarangchae). Seen from the front, the main house has a trapezoidal ujingak roof, a hipped roof, and follows the common layout without a toe-kan, a narrow front verandah bay. The sarangchae is thatched and follows the typical floor plan of a farmhouse's men's quarters, though it is unusual in placing a family living room in front of the side room. A naeoe wall, a screening wall, was set up at the gate so that the inner courtyard cannot be seen directly from outside and visitors must turn a corner to enter — a characteristic feature of Korean houses. The inner courtyard and the sarang courtyard are separated by a wall running beside the sarang room, so that they connect only through the main gate, with a small side door added for convenience.
