In Gwanwol Village, Osu-ri, Osu-myeon, Imsil-gun, Jeonbuk State stands a standing stone Buddha of the Goryeo period, 4.8m in height and carved from granite. Its lower body had been buried in the ground, but excavation and restoration have made it possible to fully appreciate the standing figure. The halo and the Buddha image are carved from a single stone: the halo takes the boat-shaped, whole-body form marked out by two incised lines, with a lotus pattern carved on the inside, a flame pattern on the outside, and a manifestation Buddha at the very top. The head of the Maitreya Buddha has tight curls and a small topknot-like usnisha, and the face is round. The ears are elongated, and the neck bears three lines of folds symbolising the Buddha's wisdom. The shoulders are narrow and the body is somewhat flat. The robe, covering both shoulders, is cut deeply in a U-shape at the chest, with clearly raised relief folds. According to a legend passed down for more than 300 years, a woman once saw a boulder the size of a house walking down from the hill behind the village; when she cried out, the boulder froze in place where it stood, and villagers, realising it was a stone Buddha, have since made offerings and cared for it devotedly.
