The Vulture Peak Assembly painting of Śākyamuni in Daeungjeon Hall at Jangansa Temple is a large-scale work measuring some 4 metres across. At the centre of the composition is Śākyamuni Buddha, flanked on either side by the attendant bodhisattvas Manjusri and Samantabhadra and by the Four Heavenly Kings, with six disciples, two Buddhas of other realms, and four of the Eight Divine Guardians arranged behind. The painting is generally in good condition, with only minor damage in places. This work hangs behind the Three Buddha statues in Daeungjeon Hall, serving as the painted backdrop to the image of Śākyamuni. Its colouring is built on traditional green and red as the dominant tones, with a soft ochre applied over broad areas to give a natural feel. The proportions of the figures are harmonious, and the delicate brushwork and soft colouring recall Buddhist paintings of the 18th century. The work was produced by six painter-monks led by the master painter (geumeo) Geumam Cheonyeo (金魚 錦庵天如, 1794–1878), who was active in the Jeolla region in the 19th century. Geumam Cheonyeo led the reconstruction of Seonamsa Temple in Suncheon and, rather than confining his activity to that one temple, worked widely across the region, rising to become a leading master among painter-monks. Given the renown of the painter Cheonyeo, this Buddhist painting is a fine work of real heritage value, standing as a benchmark for the post-Buddha paintings of the 19th century.
