Bukhansanseong Fortress Geumwiyeongigeongi Stele
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This stele records the full circumstances of the 1715 relocation, in the forty-first year of King Sukjong, of the Geumwiyeong garrison camp (yuyeong) — previously stationed inside Dongsomun Gate of Bukhansanseong Fortress — to a site below Boguksa Temple. It now stands a short distance down from Daeseongam Hermitage within Bukhansanseong Fortress, towards the fortress wall. After the Japanese invasions of the 1590s, Joseon established the Samgunmun, the three central military garrisons — Hullyeondogam, Eoyeongcheong and Geumwiyeong — to defend the capital, Hanyang, directly. Accordingly, in 1711, the thirty-seventh year of King Sukjong, these garrisons were mobilised to rebuild Bukhansanseong Fortress, and local garrison camps (yuyeong) were stationed there, each assigned responsibility for defending a section of the fortress. Among these, the Geumwiyeong camp stood on high ground at risk of collapse, and was accordingly relocated in 1715. The inscription was carved on one dressed face of a granite outcrop, a material readily available within Bukhansanseong Fortress. The capstone placed above to protect the inscription is carved simply, showing only the ridge, the descending ridgelines and the eaves. The inscription was composed by Yi I-myeong, and the stele was erected in 1715, the forty-first year of King Sukjong. Part of the inscription is now worn away, making it difficult to read the text in full.
