This is the old house where Choe Eung-seong, a noted man of letters during the reign of King Sukjong of Joseon (r. 1674–1720), once lived. The house retains a study called Yeomseonjae and a pavilion named Hamwoljeong. The pavilion was built in front of the house around 1720; it is said that his disciple Gwon Sang-ha named the pavilion "Hamwoljeong" after his teacher's pen name. In 1983 the house was moved to its present location because of the construction of Chungju Dam. In 1874, the 11th year of Emperor Gojong, his descendants built Mureungsa Shrine, where Gwon Sang-ha and Choe Eung-seong are venerated with memorial rites.
